Hemp and Cannabinoid CBD products have been all the rave recently. As of late, cosmetics enriched with power ingredient have been causing a stir. The latest trend in organic cosmetics is CBD. But what is CBD, exactly?
Even though, hemp has been used as a crop or medicinal plant for centuries, CBD has only become trendy in the cosmetic industry during the last few years. Cannabidiol, one of dozens of cannabinoids, occur naturally in hemp. Unlike cannabinoid THC, CBD does not have the same psychoactivity. It is, however, not approved as medicine or food supplement, but may be sold when the THC content is below 0.3%. CBD is extracted from hemp varieties via an elaborate extraction process, that is approved by the EU because they virtually do not produce any THC.
CBD in Skincare
Cosmetic products enriched with hemp, i.e. CBD, have been on the market for several years now. The CBD used can be of natural origin or produced synthetically. The latter has the advantage of being completely pure, i.e. hypoallergenic.
CBD can be used externally as well as internally (nutricosmetics). In nutricosmetics, CBD can support the immune system, thereby counteracting skin irritations. It has anti-inflammatory properties when used externally, unfolding its excellent skin-benefiting effects when combined with other, well-tried botanical ingredients. The selection of plant-derived components being used can slightly alter the effects of CBD. Grape extracts, aloe vera and calendula, for instance, are great complimentary ingredients.
The most common effects that CBD has on the skin are:
stimulates the natural regeneration process of the skin
restores the skin's natural protective barrier.
Hemp seed oil contain a many unsaturated essential fatty acids which bind water to moisturise the skin and smooth away fine lines. The natural protective barrier of the skin is preserved making it ideal for dry and mature skin types.
CBD in hemp seed oil stimulates cell renewal and strengthens the immune system. First studies suggest that CBD is effective at counteracting various skin diseases, such as acne, psoriasis or atopic dermatitis due to its highly anti-inflammatory effect.
Hemp and CBD in cosmetics can provide lasting freshness, a beautiful complexion and soothe irritated skin. When delving into the world of CBD and hemp-based cosmetics, it is important to ensure that the formulas are free from any silicones, sulphates or any other irritants that could cause irritation.
