Aluminium in Cosmetics
A comparison of cosmetic ingredients
Aluminium in cosmetic products: facts, myths and the philosophy behind natural cosmetics
In recent years, few topics have generated as much debate in the beauty industry as aluminium in deodorants and skincare products. From antiperspirants to complex chemical names on ingredient lists (INCI), the discussion has often been unclear and difficult to follow.
Many consumers now choose aluminium-free alternatives as a precaution. At the same time, scientific research has progressed. Comprehensive and up-to-date long-term assessments by European authorities are now available, offering a more objective perspective. In this article, we clarify the facts, explain the differences between ingredients, and outline why avoiding traditional antiperspirants aligns with the philosophy of natural cosmetics.
An overview of the scientific evidence
For many years, discussions about aluminium were based on limited data. More recently, leading European institutions, including the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) and the EU Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS), have re-evaluated the topic using new human studies.
Their conclusion is clear. Based on current scientific knowledge, adverse health effects from aluminium absorption through the skin are unlikely. The skin acts as a highly effective barrier, allowing only a very small amount of aluminium to penetrate intact skin. Experts have found no reliable scientific evidence linking aluminium compounds in cosmetics to serious health risks.
Why certified natural cosmetics take a different approach
If aluminium-based deodorants are considered safe by authorities, why do natural cosmetics avoid them? The reason is not to create concern, but to reflect a clear skincare philosophy based on respecting the body’s natural processes.
Natural freshness rather than blocking: how natural deodorants work
Conventional deodorants containing aluminium salts are known as antiperspirants. They dissolve in moisture under the arms and temporarily constrict the sweat glands, reducing perspiration and keeping the skin dry.
Natural cosmetics take a different approach by supporting the body’s natural functions. Sweating plays an important role in regulating body temperature. Natural deodorants do not interfere with this process. Instead of blocking pores, they rely on gentle, odour-neutralising and refreshing ingredients:
- Sage essential oil provides a lasting sense of freshness and is traditionally valued for its aromatic properties.
- Bicarbonate of soda and mineral salts: neutralise unwanted odours on the skin’s surface without blocking pores.
- Nourishing plant oils: ingredients such as organic shea butter or coconut oil protect and care for the delicate underarm area, making them suitable for use after shaving.
The common misconception: not all aluminium is the same
Terms such as ‘alumina’ or ‘potassium alum’ sometimes appear on the ingredient lists (INCI) of natural cosmetic products, which can lead to confusion. However, these substances differ significantly in their physical and chemical properties:
| Aluminium chlorohydrate (ACH) | Potassium alum | Alumina (aluminium oxide) |
| In conventional antiperspirants | In natural deodorants (crystal deos) | In sun creams and make-up |
| These synthetic compounds are water-soluble. They temporarily constrict sweat glands and reduce perspiration. They are not permitted in certified natural cosmetics. | This naturally occurring mineral salt is also water-soluble but has larger molecules. It remains on the skin’s surface and reduces odour without blocking pores. | This mineral powder is completely insoluble in water and chemically inert. It has no deodorising effect and cannot penetrate the skin barrier. |
The three forms explained in detail
- Aluminium chlorohydrate: A synthetic ingredient commonly used to reduce perspiration by constricting pores.
- Potassium alum: A crystalline mineral salt permitted under natural cosmetics standards such as COSMOS or BDIH. It does not block sweating but helps prevent odour formation on the skin’s surface. Due to its molecular size, it remains on the skin. Good to know: Although technically classified as an aluminium salt, many modern natural cosmetics brands now choose to avoid it and instead offer fully aluminium-free alternatives based on ingredients such as bicarbonate of soda, magnesium or sage.
- Alumina: This substance is unrelated to deodorant function. In natural cosmetics, it is used as a protective coating for mineral UV filters in sun creams or as a base ingredient in make-up. As it is insoluble in water, it remains on the skin’s surface and is removed during washing.
Conclusion: mindful skincare for a balanced body
Modern science indicates that the use of aluminium in everyday cosmetic products is unlikely to pose a health risk. Nevertheless, choosing natural cosmetics remains a conscious decision to support the skin’s natural balance.
Natural deodorants and skincare products allow the body to function as intended, while carefully selected plant-based ingredients provide gentle protection and a fresh feeling. Explore our wide range of natural deodorants and find a reliable, gentle option for everyday use.
