Facial Oils - Yay or Nay?

Facial Oils - Yay or Nay?

Many people shy away from using facial oils. Oftentimes, the reason behind not using oils is because of having oily skin or not knowing how to properly incorporate facial oils into a beauty routine.

Sadly, there are many myths and misconceptions around this topic which lead people to miss out on the fantastic benefits that these oils offer the skin.

Oils moisturise the skin:

This is false. Oils do not hydrate the skin. Instead, they help to lock in existing moisture by preventing evaporation that takes place on the surface of the skin. Oils safeguard the skin against water loss (which often occurs in winter when the air is dry). Thus, the use of facial oils is highly recommended.

All oils are identical and clog the pores:

Another misconception is that all oils are identical and clog the pores leading to acne breakouts and other skin concerns. However, oils can be vastly different in many ways. Castor oil, for example, with its thick texture has a tendency to dehydrate the skin whereas avocado oil has nourishing properties and delicate kiwi oil is quickly absorbed by the skin. Oils possess different properties, therefore, it is essential to select one that suits the needs of an individual skin type.

A skincare regime does not require the use of oils:

Human skin has the ability to produce oil and sebum which act as effective barriers to prevent the skin from dehydrating and provide protection. However, as we age our bodies have a tendency to produce less sebum resulting in dry and dehydrated skin. It becomes more vital with age to have oils form part of a beauty routine.
The use of oil-based cleansers is becoming increasingly popular, and rightly so. The theory behind it is simple: oil dissolves oil. As such, oil cleansers can be used to quickly and effectively lift away make-up and remove excess sebum. Unlike conventional cleansers, oil-based cleansers do not strip the skin of its protective lipid film thus preserving the water balance of the skin.

Not only do oils provide a gentle cleanse and aid in regulating the water balance within the skin, but they are also rich in antioxidants and essential fatty acids alongside having anti-inflammatory properties. All these components have a remarkable effect on the skin leaving the complexion looking radiantly beautiful.
