Antioxidants your skin needs
The Antioxidants Your Skin Actually Needs
Antioxidants have been one of the most talked-about concepts in skincare throughout my entire career - and for good reason. The skin faces daily exposure to UV radiation, air pollution and environmental stressors, all of which trigger the formation of free radicals: unstable molecules that can disrupt the skin barrier, accelerate visible signs of ageing and dull overall radiance.
What I have learned through many years experimenting in the laboratory and looking at how
formulas behave on the skin, is that antioxidants don’t work in isolation. The skin relies on an interconnected network of protective systems - some produced naturally within cells, others delivered through topical application. Supporting both pathways creates a more comprehensive defence against daily environmental stress.
Why Layering Antioxidants Matters
No single antioxidant can neutralise every type of free radical. Different antioxidants target different reactive species, which is why combining them tends to yield stronger, more stable results. Vitamin C, for example, works to support skin radiance and is significantly more effective when applied topically than taken orally. Paired with Vitamin E, it offers enhanced stability and protective support for the lipid barrier. Carotenoids, found in plant-based ingredients like kale, contribute to photoprotection and support a smoother skin texture. Coenzyme Q10 supports cellular energy and helps reduce the appearance of tired-looking skin. Together, these ingredients form the kind of layered antioxidant defence that helps skin maintain its resilience over time.
Argan Skin Rescue, the first product I formulated for Nourish London, combines Vitamin C with Ferulic acid from Argan, giving synergistic antioxidant protection. What I love most about hearing from our customers is how often Argan Skin Rescue becomes the product that finally works - whether that's calming skin concerns they'd struggled with for years, surprising them with a velvety, fast-absorbing texture they didn't expect from an oil, or simply reviving a routine that had stopped delivering results.
Superfoods as Skin Protectors
Plant-based superfoods are among the most potent natural sources of antioxidant compounds. Kale, in particular, is naturally rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants - supporting the skin’s ability to defend us against environmental stressors. When used in skincare formulations, kale extract helps to improve skin clarity and support a healthy-looking glow.
Upcycled olive extract is another standout ingredient. Rich in polyphenols, it contributes to the skin’s antioxidant defence while helping to maintain barrier integrity. Combining these superfood-derived actives creates a more complete protective complex that works alongside the skin, rather than simply sitting on its surface.
The Role of Skin Renewal
Alongside antioxidant protection, skin renewal is an equally important part of a long-term skincare approach. As the skin’s natural renewal cycle slows over time, the epidermis can begin to look
duller and feel less smooth. Supporting this process helps to encourage a more even-looking complexion, improved skin texture and a refreshed appearance.
Ingredients such as retinal - a naturally occurring, gentler form of Vitamin A - work in harmony with the skin’s renewal processes. Ceramides support the barrier by helping to retain moisture, while probiotic minerals help maintain the conditions in which healthy-looking skin can thrive. Together, these ingredients form a targeted approach to skin that looks and feels renewed.
Spotlight: Retinal Resilience Serum
The Retinal Resilience Serum brings together several of these key actives in a single, concentrated formula. At its core is retinal - a gentler, all-natural alternative to retinol - combined with a superfood complex of upcycled olive extract and kale sprouts. This blend is designed to help protect the skin from the day-to-day effects of environmental exposure while supporting a smoother, more radiant appearance.
The formula also features trehalose, which supports the skin’s moisture retention; vege ceramides, which help to reinforce the skin barrier; and probiotic minerals, which contribute to a firmer-looking complexion. With 99.99% natural origin ingredients and certifications from COSMOS Natural, Vegan and Cruelty-Free International, it reflects a considered approach to high-performance, planet-conscious skincare.
To use: mix 1–2 drops with your moisturiser or apply directly to cleansed skin on the face and neck. Suitable for all skin types, morning and evening.
Building Your Antioxidant Routine
Consistent antioxidant support through cleansers, serums and moisturisers helps the skin maintain its natural defences over time. A well-rounded approach might include Vitamin C for radiance, Vitamin E for barrier support, Vitamin A derivatives to encourage renewal, and ferulic acid to enhance overall antioxidant performance.
Skin that is consistently supported tends to look calmer, more even and more resilient - not just seasonally, but across the year.
